
Hamilton County is often called a peninsula, because it is separated from the rest of Florida by the Withlacoochee River on the west and the beautiful Suwannee River to the east and South. In the middle of the county runs the Alapaha River, known as the “River of Sand”, which disappears during certain parts of the year leaving a dry, sandy riverbed.
Hamilton County is rich in history and steeped with real Southern Charm and is close to major cities and conveniences yet still maintains a rural atmosphere.
The county seat is Jasper which was incorporated in 1840 and the “Old Jail” built in 1893 now houses memorabilia from by gone days and is on the National Register of Historic Places.
Florida’s first tourist destination was White Springs, beginning in 1840’s people from all over the country sought out the sulfur water of White Sulfur Springs to bathe in and drink for the “medicinal value”. Today, the Stephen Foster State Folk Cultural Center continues the tourism tradition, with walking tours of many historic sites as well as canoeing and bicycling.
Jennings is the agricultural center of Hamilton County and many beautiful southern homes line the streets of Jennings.

Hamilton County boasts one of the top Bass Fishing Places in America at Low Bush Bay. Big Shoals offers the only Class III rapids in the state and the park encompasses 3,772 acres.
There is no doubt Hamilton County is a natural treasure but it is equally valuable as a historic treasure. Hamilton County has more than 90 sites and structures on the National Register of Historic Places, making it a natural stop for history buffs.
