Americans still have a huge problem with data breaches, which make them feel like no company can keep their information safe. The latest news is about the company UnitedLex. In March 2023, they had a cyberattack that severely damaged all of their users’ personal information.
United Lex is a legal data analytics and management company that has been around since 2006. The fact that it failed to protect both employee and contractor data during the cyberattack makes it even more worrying for its users.
Because of this, some of the people who were affected chose to sue the company as a group to make sure they could get some of their money back. For starters, what is a class action suit?
Class action lawsuits are brought against a business or organization by one or more people on behalf of a larger group of people who have similar complaints. If the suit is made a class action, it covers everyone who may have been hurt in the same way.
Companies usually decide to settle these cases by giving money to people in the class. In exchange, these people give up their right to take the case to court again. As part of these settlements, the company usually says it did nothing wrong.
People who lost money because of the breach can join the lawsuit and show a receipt to get their money back. They will also get some money back to cover the time and money they spent fixing the problems that the breach caused. These changes are possible because the company has denied any wrongdoing and agreed to pay $1.3 million to settle the claims and speed up the process.
What you need to claim your part in the United Lex lawsuit data breach settlement
You will need a receipt to show that you paid for something in order to file a claim and get your money back. Account statements, tax returns, police reports, or fraud claims are some other ways to show that you paid for something. Plaintiffs can get up to $15,000, but they have to meet a lot of requirements in order to get that much money. Based on the website for the settlement:
“Up to $15,000.00 will be given back to Settlement Class Members from the Settlement Fund to cover out-of-pocket costs or losses that can be linked to the Data Breach.” Among other things, this could mean:
- Out-of-pocket costs, expenses, losses, or other charges incurred as a result of identity theft or identity fraud, falsified tax returns, or other possible misuse of a Settlement Class Member’s Personal Information;
- Out-of-pocket costs incurred after the Data Breach was disclosed associated with changing accounts or engaging in other mitigative conduct; such costs may include notary, fax, postage, copying, mileage, and long-distance telephone charges;
- Out-of-pocket professional fees incurred to address the Data Breach; and
- Out-of-pocket purchases of credit monitoring or other mitigative services after the Data Breach was disclosed, through the date of the Settlement Class Member’s Claim submission.”
Most of the people who were affected will not get as much money back, but they will probably get Reimbursement for Lost Time, which is “used to reimburse Settlement Class Members who spent money fixing problems related to the Data Breach for up to twenty (20) hours at twenty-five dollars ($25.00 per hour, totaling $500.00 per person.”
You have until Tuesday, November 12, 2024, to send in your claim.
On the settlement website, it says that if there is money left over after paying Settlement Class Members for out-of-pocket costs, lost time, and other settlement-related obligations, it will be split evenly among those who are still in the Settlement Class. Please keep in mind that extra cash payments are not a given, and the amount of these payments will depend on how many valid claims are received.
