SAINT PAUL, Minnesota – GOP State Representative Jeff Backer of Browns Valley is working on legislation that would allow Minnesota county commissioners to vote on seceding to another state.

Backer, whose district includes Wilkin, Otter Tail, Grant, and Traverse counties, believes the state counties could secede so that they are not limited to those bordering Minnesota. Indiana is working to admit 33 Illinois counties.

“This is something we take seriously because, unfortunately, we have seen what one-party rule has done in Minnesota. They listen to liberal elites in the metropolitan area.

They are not listening to the hardworking people of Greater Minnesota. There’s a reason it’s called Greater. We are greater because Greater Minnesota is the economic engine that would not be running on eight cylinders if it were controlled by one party. Your metropolitan areas would not be as strong. “That’s what gave rise to Minneapolis-St. Paul,” Backer explained.

Backer claims he introduced a similar bill last session, but it was not given a committee hearing.
