In 2021, a San Leon man beat his ex-girlfriend to death, leading to his murder conviction and 40-year prison sentence.
On October 11, a jury convicted William Glenn Herron, 57, of the murder of Mary Elizabeth Hyman.
Herron called 911 the next morning, reporting that he believed Hyman had died.
Deputies found Hyman’s body on the floor of her trailer, with multiple blunt force injuries to her head and face, blood, pulled hair, and other signs of a violent struggle.
In August 2021, Herron received a murder indictment, and his trial will start on October 7, 2024.
During the trial, prosecutors presented text messages and surveillance footage that showed Herron stalking Hyman in the days before her death.
Graphic photos of the crime scene showed Hyman’s face covered in blood and bruises. Dr. Erin Barnhart, the Galveston County Medical Examiner, testified that Hyman died from blunt force trauma.
Herron’s defense asserted that either an unidentified individual killed Hyman or accidental falls caused his death.
The jury rejected these claims and returned a guilty verdict after just over an hour of deliberation.
In her closing arguments, chief prosecutor Whitney Rasberry told jurors that “he beat her to death and discarded her like a piece of trash.”
During the sentencing hearing, Rasberry requested a life sentence, but Herron ultimately received a 40-year prison sentence.
