An Illinois man is in jail after police claim he fractured a toddler’s skull after the girl threw his cellphone.

The Will County Sheriff’s Office announced on their Facebook page that Jordan Padilla, 21, had been arrested after first responders were called to a home in Plainfield on March 15.

The call was about a 2-year-old girl who was “unconscious but breathing” while at home with her mother and Padilla, her mother’s boyfriend.

The paramedics who examined the girl discovered “suspicious injuries” to her face and abdomen and immediately transported her to the hospital for treatment. According to police, her condition was much worse than it appeared.

After being treated at the hospital, the young girl was deemed critical and transferred to another hospital in Chicago. Doctors told police she had a “blown left pupil,” a “left-sided gaze preference,” and bruises around her left eye.

They also suspected she suffered internal injuries. Police later learned that she had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.

When detectives questioned Padilla and his girlfriend, who was not named in the statement, Padilla allegedly made “incriminating statements.” When he was first questioned, he made statements that contradicted the injuries the girl presented with, according to police.

Eventually, he was asked to demonstrate how he allegedly struck the little girl, and detectives concluded that Padilla struck her in the face with an elbow.

In statements to local news outlet Herald-News, Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Chief Dan Jungles stated that Padilla allegedly attacked the girl “because he was angry at her for throwing his cellphone at him.”

The girl’s mother was reportedly not present at the time of the alleged incident, and Padilla did not inform her of what occurred.

Padilla was arrested and charged with battery, domestic battery, aggravated battery, aggravated domestic battery, and aggravated battery against a child. He is currently being held at the Will County Adult Detention Facility pending his next court appearance.
