An accused driver who got drunk on his birthday claims he could barely see anything before killing a 19-year-old college student in Miami.
Nicholas Robinson, 24, crashed into international University student Gabriela Flores’ parked Jeep at 100 mph, sending her flying into the air.
According to a Miami Beach police report reviewed by WPLG-TV News, Robinson was so drunk at the time of the fatal Friday morning wreck that he was “completely unaware” of what had happened and how he had killed someone.
Robinson allegedly told officers, “Why are you stopping me?” “It’s my birthday, and did you get the other car?”
Officers revealed that Flores, from El Salvador, was killed in the crash and was pronounced dead near her mangled Jeep.
Robinson was initially charged with drunk driving and reckless driving, but the charges were increased to vehicular manslaughter on Tuesday during a court appearance, according to reports.
“We’re here because he’s driving at a high rate of speed, I guess shortly after midnight on February 21st, and smashes into a car going west on Macarthur Causeway,” Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer told WPLG.
“They say he was driving 100 miles per hour in a 40 mile per hour zone, he had slurred speech, odor of alcoholic beverage.”
“In fact, he didn’t even know he hit another car,” the judge said. “He asked, ‘did you get the other car?'” He struck the vehicle, ejecting the victim, who claimed he was out celebrating his birthday. So I suppose it was his birthday and the victim’s death day.”
According to court records, the accused drunk driver is being held on $100,000 bail in Miami-Dade County jail, dismayed and perplexed as to how his birthday has most likely ruined his life.
