Birmingham, AL – A strong line of storms is expected to sweep across much of Alabama today, threatening tornadoes, damaging winds, and large hail in central and southern areas, including Birmingham, until 10 p.m. Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service in Birmingham, severe weather is already moving southeastward, with the most serious threats spanning a large portion of the state.
Storm timing varies by region: areas west of I-65, including Jasper and Tuscaloosa, may experience impacts from 3 a.m. to 11 a.m., whereas central locations such as Birmingham and Montgomery face threats from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Southeastern cities such as Troy and Eufaula are expected to be affected between 1 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Tornadoes, wind gusts of up to 60 mph, and hail up to the size of quarters are all possible with this storm system. Much of the state is at Level 2 on the severe weather scale.
Residents should have multiple ways to receive alerts, know their nearest safe location, and monitor updates throughout the day. Power outages and localized damage may occur, particularly in areas with weakened infrastructure.
