The deadliest place for women is at home, with an average of 140 women and girls killed by an intimate partner or family member each day last year, according to two United Nations agencies.

Globally, an intimate partner or family member was responsible for the deaths of approximately 51,100 women and girls in 2023, up from an estimated 48,800 victims in 2022, according to UN Women and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

According to the report released on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the increase was primarily due to more data available from countries rather than more killings.

However, the two organizations emphasized that this extreme form of gender-based violence continues to affect women and girls everywhere, regardless of region.

And they reiterated, “The home is the most dangerous place for women and girls.”

The report stated that Africa had the highest number of intimate partner and family killings, with an estimated 21,700 victims by 2023.

Africa also had the highest number of victims in proportion to its population, with 2.9 victims per 100,000 people.

Last year, there were also high rates in the Americas (1.6 female victims per 100,000) and Oceania (1.5 per 100,000), according to the report. Asia had a significantly lower rate of 0.8 victims per 100,000 people, while Europe had 0.6.

According to the report, intimate partners are responsible for the majority of intentional killings of women in the private sphere in Europe and America.

The vast majority of male homicides, however, occur outside of homes and families, according to the report.

The study states that women and girls continue to suffer disproportionately from lethal violence in the private sphere, despite men and boys making up the vast majority of homicide victims.

“An estimated 80% of all homicide victims in 2023 were men, while 20% were women, but lethal violence within the family takes a much higher toll on women than men, with almost 60% of all women who were intentionally killed in 2023 being victims of intimate partner/family member homicide,” according to the study.

According to the report, despite efforts by countries to prevent the killing of women and girls, such killings “remain at alarmingly high levels.”

“They are often the culmination of repeated episodes of gender-based violence, which means they are preventable through timely and effective interventions,” according to the two agencies.
