Trophy Nut Company is recalling cans of Honey Roasted Peanuts due to the potential presence of cashews.
Why It Matters
Several recalls have been initiated this year due to potentially damaged products, foodborne illness, undeclared food allergens, or the presence of bacteria.
Every year, millions of Americans develop food sensitivities or allergies. According to the FDA, the nine “major” food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts, and peanuts.
According to Food Insight, while peanuts are legumes, cashews are classified as tree nuts, so the sensitivities and reactions of those allergic to both differ.
What to Know
According to an FDA alert issued on Wednesday, the recalled peanuts were distributed at Heinen’s Grocery Stores in Illinois and Ohio between October 24, 2024, and April 4, 2025.
The UPC number for the recalled products is 20601401877, and they are packaged in an 8.25-ounce composite can with a best if used by date of October 1, 2025 and a best by date of October 3, 2025. The FDA alert indicates that 143 cases of peanuts are being recalled.
According to the agency, one allergic reaction has been reported as of Wednesday. It also included a picture of the recalled product in the alert.
What People Are Saying
The FDA alert, in part: “The recall was initiated following a consumer complaint that a product labeled Honey Roasted Peanuts contained cashews.” A subsequent investigation revealed that the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company’s production and packaging processes.
The FDA, in part, on its website in March: “Food allergic reactions range in severity from mild symptoms such as hives and lip swelling to severe, life-threatening symptoms known as anaphylaxis, which can cause fatal respiratory problems and shock.
While promising prevention and treatment strategies are being developed, food allergies are currently incurable. Early detection and learning how to manage food allergies, including which foods to avoid, are critical steps toward preventing serious health consequences.
“To protect those with food allergies and other hypersensitivities, the FDA enforces regulations that require companies to list ingredients on packaged foods and beverages. Certain foods or substances that cause allergies or other hypersensitivity reactions require more specific labeling.”
What Happens Next
Customers who purchased the recalled nuts can return them to a Heinen’s grocery store for a full refund, according to the alert.
