A Mason Middle School student will face disciplinary action after making violent verbal threats at school on Wednesday, according to a Mason City School District press release.
The district claimed the student made the threat because they felt they were being picked on. In response, the student threatened to “shoot up the school,” according to the district.
“We want to commend several MMS students who did the right thing — some immediately reported the threat to an administrator, while others used our Safe Schools Tipline,” a district spokesperson said.
The district said its safety team, which included a City of Mason Campus Safety Police Officer, looked into the threat.
The student will be disciplined, but no criminal charges have been filed. The district stated that with each threat of this nature, the school conducts a comprehensive threat assessment, considers potential legal consequences, and implements disciplinary measures.
“Additionally, students involved in such cases are typically required to engage with educational and mental health support systems before returning to the school environment,” the school authority stated.
The district also encourages parents to talk with their children about the serious consequences of making threats, whether in person, online, or on social media.
“Safety is a shared responsibility, and we are thankful for your partnership in keeping our schools safe and inclusive,” the municipality said.
