Donald Trump made history by becoming the first sitting US President to attend a Super Bowl, but some at home are dissatisfied with his attendance, particularly due to the alleged cost.
The former President’s attendance at the high-profile event was a hot topic all week. Trump traveled to New Orleans after being seen earlier playing golf with Tiger Woods.
Following the terrorist attack on Bourbon Street last month, the city implemented extra-tight security measures. When he arrived at the Superdome, the audience greeted him warmly as he praised Jon Batiste’s musical performance.
While the crowd seemed thrilled to see Trump, some at home were less enthusiastic, calling it a waste of the President’s time and taxpayer money.
The popular social media account Republicans Against Trump wrote: “Trump is the first president to attend a Super Bowl game, a trip that will cost taxpayers millions of dollars—some estimates suggest up to $15 million.” What happened to ‘government efficiency’?”
A different account requested information: “How much do you think it cost to get Donald Trump to the Super Bowl with all the Secret Service and whatever else he thinks he needs private suite all that, how much do you think that’s costing the American taxpayers?”
A third wrote: “Trump’s Super Bowl visit is expected to cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars in travel, security, and other expenses. Where is DOGE? Where’s the cutback on unnecessary spending? They only want to target programs and agencies that directly benefit people, not Trump’s vacations.”
The numerous references to DOGE allude to the fact that Elon Musk has been tasked with cutting costs across the United States, whereas this visit to the Super Bowl appears to be anything but.
The increase in security is most likely due to two major factors: the terror attack in New Orleans earlier this year and the fact that Trump was shot only a few months prior.
