BELMONT COUNTY, Ohio — Following the announcement that East Ohio Regional Hospital will begin layoffs in “ancillary services” on Friday, a local lawmaker has pledged his support for both the employees and the community.
The hospital announced the layoffs on Thursday, March 13, just two days after employees staged a peaceful protest for not receiving their pay the previous Friday.
When 7News asked Congressman Mike Rulli if he was aware of East Ohio Regional Hospital’s financial difficulties, he responded, “My staff and I have been following East Ohio Regional Hospital’s financial struggles for some time.
While I understand the difficulties of running a business, failing to pay employees, provide insurance, or pay taxes is simply unacceptable. Nobody should be expected to work without pay, and hospital employees have every right to protest.
EORC’s financial difficulties highlight a much larger issue: the state of medical care in smaller communities like Martin’s Ferry. People deserve consistent access to medical care, and I am committed to playing a leading role in finding a solution.
That means ensuring that workers receive their well-earned pay while also securing the future of healthcare in our region.”
The United Way is also stepping in to help hospital employees by partnering with local organizations to provide resources such as food, utility assistance, and essential baby supplies.
The future of East Ohio Regional Hospital and its impact on the community is uncertain, but with continued support and collaboration, there is hope for a better outcome.
