Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio expressed regret about the Democratic Party’s unwavering support for former President Joe Biden, despite signs of cognitive decline.
De Blasio appeared on Fox News’ America’s Newsroom, where he spoke candidly with anchors Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino, exposing the party’s misplaced optimism in the face of Biden’s health and age.
The former mayor claimed his party should have held a primary last year instead of allowing Biden, 82, to run for a second term.
“The progressive movement was strong when we were talking about things like health care that people needed, making college more affordable, higher minimum wage ,” he told CNN. “Unfortunately, in 2024, we didn’t have that message bluntly.”
“Did you think President Biden was up to the job mentally?” Perino inquired.
The former Democratic presidential candidate responded, “You know, I’m going to be confessional here, Dana. I, like so many other Democrats, wanted to believe, but we were mistaken, and we should have been more skeptical.”
The Fox News host questioned De Blasio, “Do you think you were lied to?”
“I do not believe I was lied to. “I believe it was magical thinking,” the Democrat responded. “We wanted to believe whatever we wanted to believe.” I believe not everyone will agree.
I believe he did some excellent things as president. However, it was clear that he was not the same person by the end of the term.”
When asked why Democrats supported Biden until last summer, de Blasio responded, “It hurt a lot.”
“I think a lot of people felt betrayed,” he said. “But I’m also saying that all of us must accept some responsibility because he did, in my opinion. He governed effectively on many levels, but he was not prepared to continue for another four years.
We should have just dealt with it. I believe that if we had had an open process, rather than saying, ‘Here’s an anointed candidate, but we actually had a process,’ we would have had a stronger candidate.”
As OK! previously reported, former President Biden spent more time on vacation than any other president in modern American history, with several insiders claiming the elderly politician required ample rest throughout his term in office due to his health.
During his 1,463 days in the White House, the former commander-in-chief took 577 days off.
The total vacation time for his final year did not include the days he took after being diagnosed with COVID.
Biden was absent for a week due to health issues before withdrawing from the presidential race against Donald Trump and handing it over to Vice President Kamala Harris.
