The human head that washed up on Key Biscayne belonged to a 19-year-old swimmer who went missing after saving his sister’s life in Miami Beach last weekend, according to authorities.
On Saturday evening, Miami Beach Police responded to South Pointe Park after receiving calls about a distressed swimmer. Victor Castaneda Jr., 19, was swimming with his younger sister, according to family members.
The two were caught in a rip current, and while the younger sister made it to safety, Castaneda vanished in the water, according to family members.
Miami Beach Police said they searched on Saturday and Sunday before halting their efforts.
However, on Tuesday morning, a worker raking the beach on Key Biscayne discovered a head that had washed ashore.
Police confirmed on Friday that the remains are Castaneda’s. The medical examiner provided confirmation.
“The Miami Beach Police Department offers its prayers and condolences to the family. “Our victim advocates will continue to support the family during this time,” the department said in a statement.
According to family members, Castaneda died as a hero.
After his disappearance, Jessica Castaneda, his older sister, said, “My brother was the kindest person I know and the hardest worker.” “He was an incredible student. He had a lot of dreams. He planned to enlist in the Navy.
Victor’s family will hold a vigil for him at South Pointe on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
