JD Vance calls for Ohio State and disses Michigan at Ohio's inaugural ball

Vice President-elect JD Vance, a Middletown native and Ohio State University alum, showed off his Buckeye pride at the Ohio inaugural ball held in Washington, D.C. on Sunday night.

During his remarks to the crowd of Ohio officials and supporters, the 40-year-old former Republican senator led the “OH-IO” chant and mocked Michigan football.

Butler County Auditor Nancy Nix told The Cincinnati Enquirer that Sen. Bernie Moreno also gave the vice president-elect a personalized No. 1 Ohio State jersey with the name “Vance” on the back.

“I would not be where I am today if it were not for Ohioans’ incredible generosity and spirit. “I am so proud to be an Ohioan,” Vance said during his remarks.

Vance also acknowledged his “great teachers” at Middletown High School, who took an interest in and mentored him. He claimed Ohio had the largest state delegation at Monday’s ceremonies, according to Nix.

“Ohio is more than just the place that shaped who I am. “I believe Ohio is the Republican Party of today and the Republican Party of tomorrow,” he added.

Guests at the black-tie event included Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, Vance’s mother, Beverly Aikins, Chief Justice of the Ohio Supreme Court Sharon Kennedy, and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy.

Aikins addressed the crowd briefly while they waited for her son, who had been delayed, to arrive. Aikins expressed her pride in Vance, and since Monday is her birthday, the audience sang her a happy birthday.

Vance will take the oath of office alongside President-elect Donald Trump today, just hours before Ohio State takes on Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff final in Atlanta.

The Ohio native graduated from Ohio State University in 2009, referring to that period as “put-up-or-shut-up time” in his memoir “Hillbilly Elegy.”

After Ohio State defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl on Friday, Vance joked on social media, “Hopefully everyone is cool with me skipping the inauguration so I can go to the national title game.”

He clarified in a Fox News interview on Sunday that he was joking and will attend both his and Trump’s inaugurations.
