John Morgan is launching his own political party amid rumors of run for governor of Florida

John Morgan, a Florida trial lawyer and Democratic mega-fundraiser, announced the formation of his own political party after repeatedly hinting that he might run for governor of the state.

The prominent attorney, whose face can be seen on billboards and advertisements for his law firm Morgan & Morgan across the country, is well-known for funding campaigns to legalize medical marijuana and raise the minimum wage in Florida. He proposed running for governor last year.

The party will be for those who are “stuck in the middle,” Morgan wrote on X. “Our two party system is broken due to Gerrymandering and divisive issues … both sides,” Morgan wrote in his piece.

Morgan previously stated that he would consider running for state office as an independent, but later changed his mind and stated that if he ran, he would form his own party, dubbed the “Capitalist Party.”

Morgan has claimed to be an independent voter, but he has also been a frequent contributor to Democratic campaigns. Morgan also hinted at running for governor as a Democrat in 2018, but he did not enter the race.

Florida will have an open gubernatorial race in 2026, with GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis’ term expiring. Republicans have increasingly taken control of Florida, a former battleground state, leaving Sunshine State Democrats scrambling for a foothold.

If Morgan is elected, he could face President Donald Trump’s handpicked candidate, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), who announced his candidacy on Tuesday. Casey DeSantis, Desantis’ wife, has also been mentioned as a possible Republican challenger to Donald Trump.
