Jackson, KY – A widespread Freeze Watch will be in effect for much of Kentucky from late Monday night to 10 a.m. Tuesday, with temperatures expected to drop between 25 and 30 degrees.
The alert covers 40 counties in eastern and western Kentucky, including Paducah, Jackson, London, and Morehead.
According to the National Weather Service in Jackson and Paducah, the coldest hours will be between 2 and 8 a.m.
Tuesday’s clear skies and calm winds may allow for significant radiational cooling. Valleys and rural communities are likely to have the lowest readings.
Officials warn that subfreezing temperatures may harm or kill crops, flowering plants, and other sensitive vegetation.
Unprotected outdoor plumbing may also be at risk in areas where low temperatures reach the mid-20s.
Residents are advised to bring potted plants inside and cover any early-season gardens. Agricultural operators should take the necessary precautions to safeguard livestock and irrigation systems.
While Kentucky typically sees its last freeze in mid-April, this occurrence is not unprecedented. A similar cold snap hit in April 2018, resulting in widespread agricultural losses.
Temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 50s by Tuesday afternoon, but another cold night may follow, necessitating additional advisories.
