A 31-year-old pregnant woman in Mississippi was killed trying to flee after her ex-boyfriend allegedly kidnapped her from a Nissan auto plant, forced her into a car, and shot her multiple times as he fled on the interstate.
Glynis Jackson attempted to flee her abductor by leaping from a moving vehicle, but was struck and killed by another vehicle, according to authorities.
Joshua Demarshall Andrews, the ex-boyfriend, has since been arrested and charged with capital murder and felon in possession of a firearm, authorities said.
“This is a heinous crime that shocks the conscience of society, and Andrews will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker said in a statement after Andrews was arrested.
According to a Madison County Sheriff’s Office news release, Andrews abducted Jackson around 7:30 a.m. on January 27 from the parking lot of the Nissan car manufacturing plant in Canton, Mississippi, about 25 miles north of Jackson.
Deputies responded to the plant after 911 calls reported the alleged kidnapping, but Andrews had already fled with Jackson.
Details about the incident are scarce, but authorities said they found Jackson near the 161-mile marker on Interstate 55 in Holmes County, about 40 miles north of Canton. Jackson, a mother of three, was shot “multiple times” and pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators also said they found a firearm believed to have been used in the crime.
Andrews surrendered himself to the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office one day after Jackson’s death.
According to the Clarion Ledger, authorities discovered Jackson was pregnant at the time she died. The sheriff’s office informed the newspaper that after learning Jackson was pregnant, Andrews was charged with first-degree murder of an unborn child.
While it was initially unclear whether Jackson fell, jumped, or was pushed from the vehicle, the Ledger reported that Jackson leaped from Andrews’ car and was fatally struck by another vehicle.
Andrews was transported and processed at Madison County Detention Center. On Jan. 28, he made his first court appearance, and a magistrate judge ordered him held without bond, according to Jackson CBS affiliate WJTV.
According to the station, prosecutors in court argued that Andrews, who allegedly traveled from Georgia to Mississippi to kill Jackson, was a potential flight risk.
Andrews has a history of violent crimes, as evidenced by previous convictions for aggravated assault and shooting into a motor vehicle. He’s been out of prison since September 2022.
