On Tuesday, Arsenal and Newcastle United will play the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinals.

Eddie Howe’s team comes to Emirates Stadium on the heels of a strong run of form.

The Magpies have won six consecutive games in all competitions, including a 3-1 win over Brentford in the competition’s quarterfinals, as well as back-to-back Premier League victories against Manchester United and Tottenham.

Arsenal, who defeated Crystal Palace in the previous round, were held to a 1–1 draw by Brighton & Hove Albion in their most recent match.

Mikel Arteta and his players were irritated by the awarding of the home team’s penalty in that game, which dashed their hopes of catching Liverpool in the title race.

However, with Arsenal unbeaten since consecutive losses to Newcastle and Inter Milan in early November, they remain slight favourites to take a first-leg lead.

Arteta has made a few changes to his team in previous rounds, but now that we’ve reached the semifinals, the manager may decide to field as strong a team as possible. He does have a few absentees to deal with, however.

Arsenal expects to be without teenager Ethan Nwaneri, who suffered a muscle injury in the 1-1 draw with Brighton.

Arteta hoped to have Raheem Sterling available again to compensate, but he is only on the bench.

Kai Havertz is expected to return from illness, while Jurrien Timber returns after missing the Brighton game due to suspension.

Bukayo Saka, Ben White, and Takehiro Tomiyasu have been absent for an extended period of time.

  • Arsenal starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Raya (GK) — Lewis-Skelly, Saliba, Gabriel, Timber — Odegaard, Partey, Rice — Trossard, Havertz, Martinelli
  • Injured: Saka (hamstring), Nwaneri (muscle), Tomiyasu (knee), White (knee).
    Suspended: None.

Newcastle are missing two key players for this first leg in north London, with Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar suspended after receiving their second yellow card of the season in the previous round. They plan to return for the second leg in February.

Sven Botman’s discomfort during the 2-1 win at Spurs was attributed to a cramp following his lengthy injury absence, and he returns to the starting lineup after making enough of a recovery to play.

Nick Pope and Emil Krafth are not expected to return until later this month, while Jamaal Lascelles and Callum Wilson will be sidelined until February.

  • Newcastle United starting lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Dubravka (GK) — Livramento, Botman, Burn, Hall — Willock, Tonali, Joelinton — Murphy, Isak, Gordon
  • Injured: Krafth (shoulder), Lascelles, Pope (both knee), Wilson (hamstring).
    Suspended: Guimaraes, Schar (yellow-card accumulation).
