Michigan Winter Weather Alert: Up to 8 Inches of Snow in Marquette Until 2 PM Monday

Marquette, MI – Lake effect snow is expected to blanket parts of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula beginning Sunday night, with snowfall totals reaching 8 inches in higher elevations near Marquette.

The National Weather Service in Marquette has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Baraga and Marquette counties from 8 p.m. Sunday to 2 p.m. Monday.

Heavy lake effect snow is expected to fall at rates of up to an inch per hour, especially in the higher terrain south and west of Marquette.

Winds gusting up to 35 mph are expected to reduce visibility in Marquette, Gwinn, L’Anse, and the surrounding areas, creating hazardous driving conditions.

The Monday morning commute is expected to be difficult due to snow accumulation and icy roads.

Additional advisories have been issued for Luce, Alger, Schoolcraft, Houghton, Gogebic, and Ontonagon counties, where snowfall totals of 3 to 7 inches are expected.

The strongest winds are expected near Lake Superior’s shoreline.

Drivers are urged to slow down and be cautious while driving. Officials recommend adding extra travel time and keeping emergency kits in vehicles.

Snowfall will begin to decrease by Monday afternoon as the system weakens, though lingering flurries may persist in lake-effect zones into the evening.
