Missouri Cold Snap Alert: Overnight Freeze Threatens Crops From Springfield to Joplin Until Monday Morning

Springfield, MO – A sharp drop in temperatures across much of Missouri and southeast Kansas has prompted a Freeze Watch from late Sunday to early Monday, putting crops and outdoor infrastructure at risk.

The National Weather Service in Springfield issued the alert at 4 a.m. CT Sunday and it will last until 8 a.m. Monday.

Temperatures are expected to fall to the mid to upper 20s across much of central, southwest, and south-central Missouri, including major cities such as Springfield, Joplin, Rolla, and Lebanon.

The freeze threat affects counties from Benton and Pulaski to Barry, Howell, and McDonald. Southeastern Kansas counties such as Crawford and Cherokee are also affected.

Frost and freeze conditions can kill blooming fruit, sensitive vegetation, and damage unprotected outdoor plumbing systems.

Residents are advised to take immediate precautions. Bring sensitive potted plants indoors and protect early crops from freeze damage. Those with outdoor plumbing should insulate or turn off any exposed pipes overnight.

Though early April freezes are not uncommon, the scope of this cold snap exceeds expectations. Gardeners and farmers should stay alert, especially as more seasonal planting activity begins statewide.
