Philadelphia Revenue Department Resumes Door-to-Door Tax Investigations

The Philadelphia Department of Revenue has resumed door-to-door investigations as part of its standard procedures for ensuring tax compliance and determining eligibility for assistance programs.

These visits are intended to resolve outstanding tax issues or confirm account information for individuals, businesses, and nonprofit organizations.

Officials emphasize that these visits are both precautionary and service-oriented, and are frequently initiated only after multiple prior notices have been sent via mail.

Agents may visit homes or businesses to verify billing addresses, investigate unfiled taxes, or assist property tax relief program participants.

In rare cases, visits may include serving court orders or enforcing business closures if licenses are revoked.

To avoid confusion about legitimacy, residents are asked to identify official agents by their navy blue polo shirts or jackets labeled “City of Philadelphia Investigations.”

Agents also wear Revenue Agent badges, drive city-issued vehicles, and distribute business cards.

Upon arrival, agents will introduce themselves, show identification, and clearly explain the reason for their visit.

Notably, agents will never request sensitive information such as Social Security numbers or tax return information during these visits, ensuring that the process is secure and transparent.

Taxpayers and businesses seeking assistance or clarification on their tax obligations are encouraged to contact the Department of Revenue directly for assistance, which includes flexible payment plans and relief opportunities.

This renewed effort demonstrates the department’s proactive approach to balancing tax compliance and taxpayer support while maintaining public trust in its operations.
