Our sister station CBS Colorado says that the sentencing for two people accused of killing someone with a rock in 2023 has been pushed back.
CBS Colorado said that Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak will be sentenced in May 2025. In May, they both made deals with prosecutors in Jefferson County.
Three teens, Joseph Koenig, Karol-Chik, and Kwak, were arrested in April 2023 on charges that they threw big rocks from landscaping at cars in Boulder and Jefferson counties.
Alexa Bartell, 20, died when one of these rocks hit her car and killed her. As she drove, she talked on the phone with a friend. When she was hit, her phone went dead. Her friend tracked her phone and found Bartell dead in the car.
Seven vehicles were hit, and two more people were hurt.
The teens, who were seniors in high school, were arrested and charged with murder.
The plea deal for Karol-Chik said that he would spend 25 to 72 years in the Department of Corrections. CBS Colorado reported that Kwak pleaded guilty, which meant that all 13 of his original charges were dropped.
Kwak is now being charged with trying to commit assault, assault in the second degree, and assault in the first degree.
After a court-ordered review, Koenig’s trial has been moved to April 11, 2025, through April 25, 2025. CBS Colorado said that Kwak and Karol-Chik’s trials were set for May 1 and May 2.
