Food stamps, which are part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), are one of the most important aid programs in the U.S. They help more than 40 million people every month. In Texas, the program helps many low-income families get healthy food and is their lifeline. Here is when people in Texas can expect to get their October SNAP checks.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) runs SNAP on a national level. In Texas, the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is in charge of it. To encourage a healthy, well-balanced diet, the main goal of the program is to help families buy groceries like fruits, veggies, proteins, and grains.
The Lone Star Card
But there are strict rules about what you can do with SNAP payments. You can’t spend the money on things like cigarettes, booze, hot meals, gas, or your house bills. If you abuse the benefits, you could face punishments like less or no help, and you could even face legal consequences.
In Texas, people who get SNAP benefits use the Lone Star Card, which is an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card that works like a bank card. Not only can the Lone Star Card be used for SNAP benefits, but it can also be used for TANF benefits.
The exact payment date is based on the recipient’s Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number, which can be found on official SNAP papers. Next week, people with EDG numbers 46 to 71 will get their payments. The last two numbers of this number tell you when a person will get their benefits put on their Lone Star Card.
