People who get SSDI may have to pay for life. If you live in the United States and start getting disability benefits, you can keep getting them for as long as you are eligible.
You will still get the same amount when you reach Full Retirement Age. There will be no change in the amount you get. It might be a problem if your benefit payment is low.
But will the amount of SSDI stay the same? Or will your disability payments keep going up? In fact, when prices go up or down, the Social Security Administration changes the monthly payments that retirees, SSDI recipients, and SSI recipients get.
This change happens every year and is called a COLA (cost of living adjustment). It starts on January 1 of each year.
Will all SSDI recipients get the same COLA increase regardless of the amount?
Most of the time, the COLA increase is the same for all Social Security Disability Insurance benefits. As of October 10, 2024, the price index will go up by 2.5% in January 2025.
It’s not like the rest of the payments for Social Security benefits go up at the same rate as the maximum amounts. The largest SSDI payment in 2024 is $3,822, and it will rise to $4,018 in 2025. That’s a lot more than the 2.5% that most people who get Disability Insurance pay.
In fact, the normal SSDI payment is around $1,542. When the COLA goes up in 2025, it will be about $1,580, which is $38 more than it was in 2024. Your payment might go up or down depending on how high inflation is.
