Marion, IL – Thunderstorms dumped more than 8 inches of rain across southern Illinois on Saturday, prompting four counties to issue flash flood warnings until 9 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, flash flooding is either ongoing or expected to begin soon in Williamson, Franklin, Johnson, and Pulaski counties.
Law enforcement reported widespread heavy rainfall by 4:27 p.m., with up to a half-inch of rain still possible in the area.
Marion, Herrin, Benton, West Frankfort, and Vienna are among the hardest hit communities. Floodwaters have impacted low-lying roads, underpasses, and small creeks.
Urban areas and poor drainage zones are particularly vulnerable, and officials advise drivers to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.
The flooding is the result of a heavy downpour caused by slow-moving thunderstorms, which overwhelmed drainage systems and flooded multiple roads.
Emergency responders are closely monitoring the situation and assisting with traffic control where roads are impassable.
Residents are advised not to walk or drive through floodwaters. Vehicles account for the majority of flood-related deaths. Nightfall may obscure flood hazards, increasing risks.
Stay tuned for additional updates and warnings as conditions change. For road closures and safety updates, check with local emergency services or the Illinois Department of Transportation.
