Starting April 1, dogs are not allowed on Massachusetts beaches

March has arrived in Massachusetts, and the beach and summer are already on my mind. Daylight Saving Time begins on Sunday, so we’re already getting more afternoon sunlight. Now we just need warmer weather!

I guess I hadn’t realized that dogs are not permitted on any DCR beach in Massachusetts. Is anyone following these rules? I see people walking dogs along the Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach reservations all the time.

You still have some time in March to go to the beach with your dog.

Dogs Not Allowed On Beaches In Mass. Starting April 1

It is a rule. Dogs are not permitted on any DCR beach in Massachusetts from April 1st to September 15th.

DCR provides swimming at ocean beaches along the Atlantic coast. If getting wet isn’t your thing, come out to explore the shoreline and enjoy the cool ocean breeze. From Salisbury Beach to Horseneck Beach, you’ll see breathtaking sunrises and views.

Locations of DCR beaches in MA:

  • Boston Harbor Islands
  • Castle Island
  • Carson Beach
  • Constitution Park Beach
  • Demarest Lloyd State Park
  • Fort Phoenix State Reservation
  • Horse Beach State Reservation
  • Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach Reservation
  • Nantasket Beach Reservation
  • Revere Beach Reservation
  • Salisbury Beach State Reservation
  • Savin Hill and Malibu Beach
  • Scusset Beach State Reservation
  • South Cape Beach State Park
  • Tenean Beach
  • Winthrop Shore Reservation

Why aren’t dogs allowed in DCR beaches?

Dogs are not permitted on the beaches due to concerns about disturbing beachgoers and dog waste polluting the ocean waters. Leash rules vary by beach, and some beaches in Massachusetts allow dogs to be off leash at times.

Dogs are allowed on the following beaches to name a few

  • Provincetown Dog Beach (Provincetown Cape Cod)
  • Plum Island Beach (Newburyport)
  • Singing Beach (Manchester-by-the-Sea)
  • Rexhame Beach (Marshfield)
  • Little Fresh Dog Pond (Cambridge)
