The collegiate squad declines to play a transgender opponent

Wyoming won’t play in this weekend’s volleyball match against San Jose State because one of their players is transgender.

The university said on Tuesday that they would not be playing this weekend’s game against San Jose State.

Tuesday, the volleyball team said in a statement, “After much thought, the University of Wyoming will not play its scheduled conference match against San Jose State University.”

“The Mountain West Conference will record the game as a forfeit and a loss for Wyoming because that’s how the rules work.”

The university did not give a clear reason for its choice, but it is clear that it was because of Blaire Fleming, a transgender woman who was competing for San Jose State.

In a statement, San Jose State said it was upset about the ruling.

Our SJSU student athletes are following all NCAA and Mountain West rules and regulations, so it’s disappointing that they are not being able to participate.

The statement said, “We are committed to helping our student athletes get through these challenges and compete in a way that is fair, safe, and respectful for everyone.”
