Virginia men were arrested in an alleged elderly roofing scam in San Mateo County

San Mateo County has become the focus of a police investigation following the arrest of three Virginia men who were allegedly involved in a roofing scam aimed at elderly residents.

According to KTVU, the suspects allegedly used fraudulent contractor licenses to overcharge for subpar and often unnecessary work.

The investigation began in November 2023, when San Mateo police were alerted to a group with Irish accents operating under the name “Statewide Roofing and Siding.” The scam was discovered when one victim noticed that his mother was being grossly overcharged for roofing work that was never completed.

Police worked with other Peninsula departments to discover that similar scams had been reported.

The San Mateo County District Attorney’s social media post confirmed charges were filed against Charlie Anderson, David Anderson, and Darren Temple, who will be arraigned on December 5.

It was last May 7 when a man approached the police, suspecting that his mother was the victim of a scam by a company that initially offered a “free” roof inspection.

The suspect’s initial claims of minor repairs quickly snowballed into a costly declaration of the need to replace the entire roof completely.

The victims of this scam were duped with professional-sounding company names like “Teco Roofing and Masonry.” During their investigation, police discovered the use of fictitious names and realized that the scam extended beyond a single company label.

The suspects were arrested on May 8 and booked on suspicion of theft from elderly or dependent adults. Police are continuing to investigate and are looking for any additional victims.

They have asked anyone who has had roofing work done by “Statewide Roofing and Siding” or “Teco Roofing and Siding” to contact Officer Thornburg of the San Mateo Police Department.
