A mother who allegedly attempted to strangle her teenage daughter in a “honor killing” because she refused to agree to an arranged marriage was apprehended while attempting to flee across the US-Canada border.
According to the Daily Mail, Zahraa Subhi Mohsin, 40, attempted to flee to Canada after being charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, and assault for attacking her 17-year-old daughter outside a Washington high school in October.
According to FOX 13, Mohsin and her husband, Ihsan, allegedly threatened their daughter with a “honor killing” after she refused an arranged marriage proposal to an older man. They then allegedly assaulted the girl outside her high school.
A video surfaced of Ihsan holding his daughter in a chokehold for a minute while her classmates attempted to free her.
When they succeeded, the girl’s mother attempted to choke her daughter until she, too, was restrained.
According to the Daily Mail, the girl suffered abrasions on her shoulders as well as burst blood vessels in her eyes.
Ihsan was arrested on the spot, but his wife was not detained until her passport was inspected at the Canadian border.
She had dropped off her children with their uncle just across the border and was on her way back when she was apprehended, according to the Daily Mail.
Ihsan was not initially charged with attempted murder and was released from jail after posting a $150,000 bond, but he was arrested again after a second-degree attempted murder charge was added on Nov. 5. His wife was charged with attempted murder and placed on $500,000 bail.
The couple remains in jail.
