Will our kids be sacrificed?
As the parent of two young children who will be attending Columbus City Schools in a few years, I am completely disgusted by what I am seeing in the Statehouse and the White House.
Every child in this state and country deserves a good education, but Gov. Mike Dewine wants to cut the Columbus City Schools budget, and Elon Musk and President Donald Trump are discussing abolishing the Department of Education so they can give trillions of dollars in tax breaks to their campaign contributors.
These cuts will result in schools closing, children going hungry, and teachers being laid off.
How many private jets and yachts do the billionaires require? I don’t care who you voted for or if you voted at all, but can we all agree that destroying public schools and holding our students’ futures hostage is abhorrent?
These billionaires and their bought-and-paid-for politicians are plundering our schools, healthcare, and social security to enrich themselves. To paraphrase the late comedian George Carlin, “It’s a big club, and we ain’t in it.”
Elon Musk and the president do not have the authority to decide whether to fund public education. It belonged to the American people.
And, frankly, we should start acting like it! We need to flood the Statehouse, testify in committees, blow up their inboxes and phone lines, confront our congresspeople, and do whatever it takes to secure our children’s future.
