A mother who 'would forget' to feed her infant son who starved to death is sentenced to 65 years in jail

A mother in Indiana will spend decades in prison for killing her 2-month-old son, who died of hunger.

Records from the court show that 23-year-old Caylin Opal Marie Monroe was given a 65-year prison sentence on Friday for the murder of Silas Scott. Jakob Chance Scott, the father, was also charged in the case. He has a court date on December 2.

The Warrick County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation began in February 2022 when police were called to 3844 Honeysuckle Drive in Warrick County to check on an infant who wasn’t breathing.

At the house, medics tried to bring the baby back to life, but they had to declare the baby dead at the scene.

The police spent months looking into it. Police questioned the couple on April 21, 2022, after they had gathered evidence and learned that the baby had died of hunger.

An affidavit lists the things that investigators say the couple told them when they were questioned by the police.

Monroe told the police that the baby was healthy when it was born but small and had trouble growing.

The paper said she said she thought the baby was sick but never had time to call and make an appointment with a different doctor.

Monroe first told the police officer that she fed her baby when they told her that he had been starving.

But when the investigator said there was nothing in the baby’s stomach during the autopsy and asked if missing feedings was normal, the mother “agreed and said,’sometimes yeah,'” the affidavit said.

The paper said, “Caylin said she would be busy sometimes and not have time to feed Victim 1.” “Calylin said that Victim 1 would sometimes forget to eat or drink.” Caylin agreed that she would forget about Victim 1 sometimes because he wasn’t making a sound or was asleep, and she was busy with the other kids. Caylin said her daily routine was pretty simple, and she forgot to feed Victim 1 sometimes.

The affidavit said Scott allegedly told police, “I’d feed him if he was crying.”

The boy was named “Silas’ Shuggie Bear’ Chance-Kent Scott” in his death notice. He was from Boonville, Indiana, and was the son of “Jakob and Caylin (Monroe) Scott.”

His death notice said he “passed away” at home. The baby’s death notice also said that it has three siblings.
